Quake III Arena's focus on multiplayer gameplay spawned a lively community, similar to QuakeWorld, that is still active as of 2021. It employs a client–server model, requiring all players' clients to connect to a server. The game allows players whose computers are connected by a network or to the internet to play against each other in real time, and incorporates a handicap system. Quake III Arena was specifically designed for multiplayer. Quake III Arena comes with several gameplay modes: Free for All (FFA), a classic deathmatch, where each player competes against the rest for the highest score, Team Deathmatch (TDM), where usually two teams of four compete for the highest team frag (kill) total, Tournament (1v1), a deathmatch between two players, usually ending after a set time and Capture the Flag, which is played on symmetrical maps where teams have to recover the enemy flag from the opponents' base while retaining their own. Players also drop the weapon they were using when killed, which other players can then pick up. If a player dies, all of their weapons are lost and they receive the spawn weapons for the current map, usually the gauntlet and machine gun. Weapons appear as level items, spawning at regular intervals in set locations on the map. The BFG super-weapon is an exception to this compared to other similarly named weapons in the Doom/ Quake series, Quake III Arena's incarnation of this weapon is basically a fast-firing rocket launcher and it is found in hard-to-reach locations. The weapons are balanced by role, with each weapon having advantages in certain situations, such as the railgun at long-range and the lightning gun at close quarters. While deathmatch maps are designed for up to 16 players, tournament maps are designed for duels between 2 players and in the single-player game could be considered ' boss battles'. As the game progresses, the fights take place in more complex arenas and against tougher opponents. In Quake III Arena, the player progresses through tiers of maps, combating different bot characters that increase in difficulty, from Crash (at Tier 0) to Xaero (at Tier 7). A familiar mixture of gothic and technological map architecture as well as specific equipment is included, such as the Quad Damage power-up, the rocket launcher, and the BFG. Continuity with prior games in the Quake series and even Doom is maintained by the inclusion of player models and biographical information. The game's story is brief: "the greatest warriors of all time fight for the amusement of a race called the Vadrigar in the Arena Eternal." The introduction video shows the abduction of such a warrior, Sarge, while making a last stand. Instead, it simulates the multiplayer experience with computer-controlled players known as bots. Unlike its predecessors, Quake III Arena does not have a plot-based single-player campaign. Quake III Arena has also been used extensively in professional electronic sports tournaments such as QuakeCon, Cyberathlete Professional League, DreamHack, and the Electronic Sports World Cup. Many liked the crisp graphics and focus on multiplayer. The game was praised by reviewers who, for the most part, described the gameplay as fun and engaging. Notable features of Quake III Arena include the minimalist design, lacking rarely used items and features the extensive customizability of player settings such as field of view, texture detail and enemy model and advanced movement features such as strafe-jumping and rocket-jumping. It features music composed by Sonic Mayhem and Front Line Assembly founder Bill Leeb. The single-player mode is played against computer-controlled bots. The third installment of the Quake series, Arena differs from previous games by excluding a story-based single-player mode and focusing primarily on multiplayer gameplay. Quake III Arena is a 1999 multiplayer-focused first-person shooter developed by id Software. Hello, nice to meet you today.ĬE: First up, tell us a little bit about what Iconfactory does and what kind of software you guys do and maybe a little bit on what Iconfactory does in general.ĬH: In its most basic sense what we do is make software look better. Update: Transcript has been added! Read the transcript after the jump.ĬE: Okay, so we're here today with Craig Hockenberry of Iconfactory. Thanks for your patience! (We will also make a post alerting you when all of the transcriptions are done.) This interview will be transcribed and we will mark the post as updated when this occurs. However, this process is tedious (especially on the videos with poor audio). NB #2: We do have someone who is crawling through these interviews and transcribing them. The future for video (and audio) on Ars will be that much more enjoyable because of this learning experience. So while some of these videos might be pretty bad, just keep in mind that they were a trial run, hastily put together, and on short notice. NB: I've been discussing our trials and errors concerning the videos we took during the week of WWDC with my fellow staff and a number of our readers via e-mail and while I think we ran into some tough technical challenges and a very short time line to deal with them, I think we came out of this experience all that much better equipped to conduct these sorts of video interviews at future events. Click the play button above to watch the entire interview. Craig sat down to talk with Clint Ecker about what the Iconfactory does, how they approach software development, and more. Even if you haven't used any of the company's applications ( Frenzic, IconBuilder, Twitterrific, iPulse, Xscope, Pixadex, and there's more), downloaded any of its free icons, or made use of its extensive stock icons service, you've undoubtedly had benefit from its hand in several popular Mac applications. Ars Technica interviewed Craig Hockenberry, software developer at the IconfactoryĬraig Hockenberry works for a company which is nearly ubiquitous to all Apple users, the Iconfactory. The biggest issue, however, deals with the lack of a mid-mission save state outside of keeping the game in memory. Even the sound effects are well done, especially when heard via headphones.Ĭomplaints in iBomber Defense Pacific are few and usually limited to minor issues such as the occasional miscue when trying to rotate your dug in tower and a few random crashes. Three difficulties, multiple objectives per map, and bonus missions provide a wealth of replayability. Maps start off simple and end up large and hectic, with some missions having you defend on multiple fronts including simultaneous land, water, and air attacks. Visuals are fast, fluid and colorful, although the backdrops at this point aren’t as special as the original. Pacific also greatly expands on the ‘Victory Point’ leveling system from the original – allowing for a bit more customizability and thus strategic play styles.īesides gameplay, most other aspects of Pacific share the same devotion to detail that Cobra has provided in the past. Other nice additions include a ‘perk system’ that allows players to assign three perks that range from starting with more money to faster tower targeting (and are unlockable via a variety of objectives). These sorts of interactive elements are certainly not unique to Pacific, but the quality in which they’re implemented is something not usually seen. This is also shown in the ‘Bomb’ tower, which is a passive tower that slowly builds bombs that can be dropped on any part of the map. I’m a huge fan of this mechanic because it feels like tower defense finally has a nice supplemental mechanic that rewards extra interaction. However, you can rotate the tower’s cone of range at any time which basically provides an inexpensive (and significant) upgrade to your towers, assuming you can effectively manage your aiming. New to the mix, however, is the ‘Dig In’ mechanic, which is a good addition and puts a greater emphasis on micromanagement and strategy.īy telling a tower to dig in, you can increase the range, damage, and armor of the tower but at the sacrifice of vision (instead of attacking from all angles, a frontal cone becomes your only attack range). Pacific changes up some of the tower names, but they’re really nothing new and should be instantly be familiar for all TD veterans. Like its predecessor, Pacific still has the armor/tower repair mechanic (along with the rewind function), as well as the standard tower archetypes and upgrade levels. Building on everything we loved in the original, Pacific does a great job adding new gameplay twists while fine-tuning the traditional TD formula that has made the genre so popular.įrom a gameplay perspective, iBomber Defense Pacific is a great mix of old and new tower defense elements that combine to create an experience that is far more ‘interactive’ than most traditional TD titles. Following this trend is iBomber Defense Pacific, sequel to Cobra’s iBomber Defense and the latest Chillingo TD title. Fans of tower defense should feel lucky it seems like we get at least one marquee release every month. Playing under the name the Baseball Boys, the trio of bassist/singer Tony Lewis, guitarist/keyboardist John Spinks, and drummer Alan Jackman played around London and recorded some early demos, attracting the attention of Columbia/CBS Records. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License additional terms may apply.Ironically, given their obsession with America's favorite pastime, the Outfield got their start in London's East End. With unreleased songs in the bin, the Outfield may well return in some form. The group released a statement saying: “We are relieved that his passing was peaceful and painless.” It also remarked that the future of the band appeared "unclear". Guitarist and songwriter John Spinks sadly passed away in July 2014, succumbing to liver cancer after a long and tough battle. Although popular interest in the band waxed and waned since their 80s musical heyday, their group maintained a devoted fan base among followers of the power pop genre for many years. Their music popping up in various places (from Katy Perry recording a Outfield cover titled "Use Your Love" to the 'Grand Theft Auto: Vice City' video game using their music), the guys had somewhat of a resurgence of interest at the tail end of their career. Titled 'Replay', it saw a Jrelease, with the band's cult following enjoying deliberately retro sounding songs such as "California Sun". In mid-2009, the Outfield entered a London studio to begin recording their seventh studio album. The group's comeback album, 'Any Time Now', was released by Sidewinder Records in March 2006 and constituted a comeback to their traditional pop rock sound. They resumed touring in 1998, and thereafter the band released two live albums via their website. After the disappointing response to their 1992 album 'Rockeye', which represented a shift towards progressive rock and arena rock, the group essentially disbanded for much of the 90s. Drummer Alan Jackman left, and, now as a duo, they recorded 'Diamond Days' in 1991. Though receiving critical acclaim, the rock mainstream seemed to have shifted considerably underneath them. While their second album, titled 'Bangin'', hit the top 20 on the Billboard 200 list had both singles hit the top 40 on the Mainstream Rock chart, the group began losing their popular audience by their third album, 'Voices of Babylon', came out in 1989. Though possibly peaking too early, the band continued to record and tour through the 80s and then into the early 90s as the Anglo-American pop rock and power pop scenes evolved. Other singles "Say It Isn't So" and "Everytime You Cry" also made it into the top 20 on Mainstream Rock chart. It has went on to be featured in a number of 80s-themed compilation albums, and over a thousand covers and remixes by other artists have been released physically and/or online. As remarked by an Allmusic reviewer, the band had a knack for making "a harmonious chorus that is overly smooth and rock savvy." Their single "Your Love" reached #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 as well as #7 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart, and it soon became their 'signature song. Picking up critical acclaim for their melodic rock sound, the album reached #9 on the Billboard 200 list and ended up reaching triple platinum status in America. culture, they released their first album, titled 'Play Deep', in 1985 through Columbia Records. Changing things around to 'The Outfield', perhaps a hint of their later American success due to their affinity for U.S. They began recording during the mid-80s, picking up the name 'Baseball Boys' as a reference from a gang of hooligans from the cult film 'The Warriors'. with new wave hits such as "All of the Love" and "Your Love" but never reached the album or singles charts in their homeland. Originally known as the 'Baseball Boys' before singing with Columbia/CBS Records in 1984, the guys were unusual for a British band in that they enjoyed commercial success in the U.S. Its members were bassist/singer Tony Lewis, guitarist/keyboardist and songwriter John Spinks, and drummer Alan Jackman. The Outfield was an arena rock-influenced British pop rock/power pop power trio based in the East End of London, England. |
